Keeping Up With The Podcasts

Owning and running a creative business has its perks. Being surrounded by like-minded creative people is what makes me get up in the morning. Being able to have a conversation with someone that can articulate their view on the world is a breath of fresh air, even if their view on the world seems to be completely different to yours.

Sometimes, when these like-minded creatives that surround me are actually doing their work, I find that podcasts are equally as fresh, and do the job just as well.

Here is a list of some podcasts that I would recommend tuning into. Whether you listen to them while you’re driving to work, taking your morning jog or getting horizontal like quarter to three, you will be able to keep up with what’s new in the “creative” world while maintaining that work-life balance. Niiiice!

Clever – A podcast about Design

“Clever is a podcast about design. Well, actually, it’s about designers, too. Sure, they’re visionaries, problem-solvers, critical thinkers, rebels and aesthetes, but above all, they’re human. Designer Amy Devers and Design Milk’s Jaime Derringer are having candid and revealing conversations with these super-smart people because, well, relating to the humans responsible for the objects and environments that shape our lives can result in a more meaningful connection to the built world. Hot damn!”

The podcast that really grabbed my attention, was the Tina Roth Eisenberg episodeTina is the creator of Creative Mornings, Tattly and owner of the famous blog Swiss Miss. She is definitely someone we want to invite over for a coffee and chat.

Adventures In Design With Mark Brickey

This podcast has over 400 shows and is a daily talk show for creatives just like you, exploring how others design happiness into their professional lives. Sometimes educational, sometimes off topic, but always entertaining!

The Honest Designers Show

“The Honest Designers Show started when our founder Tom found he was regularly chatting and sharing tips with top designers; Ian Barnard, Lisa Glanz and Dustin Lee.”

One of my favourite, and most relatable podcasts, was the 19 Reasons Why Being A Design Sucks episode. The team have a full on tongue in cheek rant about the negative aspects of being a designer. This episode is very entertaining, as one can appreciate their sleepless nights and pet peeves.

Design Matters with Debbie Millman

“Design Matters with Debbie Millman is a long running audio podcast featuring industry-leading graphic designers, educators, authors, change agents and thinkers such as Steven Heller, Stefan Sagmeister, Milton Glaser, and Tim Brown.”

99 Percent Invisible

This show is an incredibly interesting look at all of the unnoticed design and architecture that affects our everyday world. Why are those inflatable men always at used car lots? Where did fortune cookies actually originate? (And how?) This podcast takes a deep-dive into the unnoticed, out-of-reach corners of the design world.
